My daughter wanted this journal but she has been so frustrated in getting it to recognise her voice that she has not played with it since the day she got it. Sometimes it will open with my voice but never with hers. It was a real fantastic consept that never worked.

    Disappointed Small Girls
    Rating:1 out of 5 stars
I bought two of these for my five and six year ancient girls. I reviewed other password journals and this one had the better reviews, relatively speaking, to other options. When we got them, only one worked with the password command, the other didn’t respond at all. The light inside the one that wouldn’t open did work well, howevever the journal that would open did not have an operable light. Unfortunetly, I could have just bought them a fancy binder which would have served the same purpose. Cute thought, but poor quality.

It will make your small girl weep and you mad and frustrated
    Rating:1 out of 5 stars
Attempting to set up the Password Journal, half an hour later, had me shouting in rage and frustration and my small 6 yr. ancient daughter disappointed and crying.

Thanks to Amazon’s fantastic reviewers I knew that this is was coming but the deceiving TV advertising campaign conditioned my girl into wanting it so intensely, me reading what others had to say about this over-hyped item had no effect on her. She simply wanted it and she had to have it. In the end, I had to hope against hope that everyone describing their experiences with this toy was incorrect and ordered it. Now, a few days later, we both agree that this is not what she expected.

WHAT I DID LIKE ABOUT PASSWORD JOURNAL:

    - Nothing but my small girls likes the fact that it sometimes opens when she says the password.

WHAT I DIDN’T LIKE ABOUT PASSWORD JOURNAL:

    - Batteries not included (3 AAA’s).

    - As I was inserting the batteries, the contraption woke up and demanded that my girl said the password and confirmed it. It seems it took the vibrations generated by my screwdriver to be the password because it accepted it.

    - Since my girl couldn’t imitate the noise of a screwdriver, it refused to open.

    - To reset it, had to unscrew the crew closing the battery door and had my girl scream her password as I was inserting the batteries.

    - Once it finally opened, all we found inside was the cheapest possible notepad of a non-standard size, probably impossible to replace once used, some cheap plastic stylus and nothing else, except of a UV lamp – that’s exactly what my kids needed, a small cataract.

    - Attempting to set the time and date is were we stopped. This brain-comatose device is suppose to know human speech but the claims are slightly exaggerated. To set the time, for example, you must say ‘change time’. 90% of the time, this is interpreted as ‘change password’, ‘change date’ or simply not understood. In the rare instances when the command is fully understood, you are supposed to say the year’s digit, one at a time as in ‘two’ [beep], ‘zero’ [beep], ‘zero’ [beep], ‘nine’ – can ANYONE clarify why you have to say two-zero-zero on a toy that was launched in 2004? Anyway, it usually gives up after the first 2 or 3 digits so the time is never set. Want to tell it to turn on the light? No problem, it will question you for the new password. And on, and on, and on it goes.

I must admit that I was partially incorrect. Even though many of the advertised features – time/calendar, voice commands – don’t work and never will, our girl is pleased with the fact that the PJ opens at the sound of her saying her secret word and she can hide her secrets in there – we did succeed in setting a password, eventually. And, if she is pleased, then I am pleased but, the grown-up in me says that, while the concept is excellent, the implementation is not.

On the plus side it looked pretty nice, the pen and light worked….that’s just about all the pluses.

    A HUGE disappointment.

Password Journal works on the principle of voice recognition. A password is recorded and then – in theory anyway – the plastic unit will open only to the sound of your voice. Except it doesn’t – well, it does on occasion and at random. This was bought for my daughter who was extremely excited about it. Unfortunately, in her determined – but unsuccessful – efforts to open the unit she resorted to shouting the password very loudly, rendering the whole notion of a “secret” password pretty much invalid as it could be heard all around the house! The bulky plastic unit contains a cheap pen, light, and a basic blank notebook that could be bought for a few cents at a local store. My daughter, as young as she is, recognised this as a terrible buy and was pleased to see it returned. Hard to believe that this item is priced at [...] in the UK as at any price it would be a waste of money. One vital lesson learned though: don’t believe everything you see on TV.

The journal sometimes requires one to do the same scenario (such as setting the date) more than a few times. It will incorrect information (ex: a 7 versus a 9) no matter how clear one says it. I would give the product itself a 5-6 out of 10.

I just bought this for my 6 year ancient daughter. I made her wait a full week, with excellent behavior, and as a reward she got this piece of junk. She was so excited and couldn’t wait to show her friends, but just like everyone else that has posted a review here, we found that the voice recognition was unbelievably terrible – picture your worst experience with one of those automated phone systems and multiply that by about 50! Thank you to the folks at “Girl Tech” for making my kid weep!

This toy was bought at an brilliant price on Amazon. . .or so I thought. Really no amount of money was really worth spending on this toy. I gave these toys to my daughters (8 and 7) for Christmas and they NEVER worked. The password function did not work on either of the journals. The blue light inside is somewhat fun, but my daughters were both extremely disappointed that the password function did not work and did not play with them. My 4 year ancient son finished up coloring on the paper and using the blue light, but it has to be at a certain angle to see what you wrote, so he was getting frustrated. All in all, your money will be better spent elsewhere.

Some difficulties, but fun for an 8 yr ancient
    Rating:3 out of 5 stars
I was convinced that this item was defective because the set up was so hard. My 8 yr ancient never would have been able to do it on her own. So unless a parent helps, it would be useless. The journal prompts you to set the date and a password, which is simple enough, but it continued not to accept the information until we did it over and over. Now that it’s done, my daughter is enjoying it, but my son figured out that any word that sounds a small bit like her password will open it. So, that kind of stinks… Oh well.

    Rating:3 out of 5 stars
This journal is ok. We had to do the initial set-up several times. My husband and 6-year-ancient daughter were very frustrated. After that, it worked pretty well. She played with it for a few days but seems to prefer the simple, spiral-bound journals we get in the dollar bins at Michaels!

Overpriced and flimsy. It took nearly half an hour to set the password!

Because it took so many tries and a relatively loud voice, I doubt the

    password is very secure.

I bought this journal for my five year ancient daughter. She likes to write. There are several functions on this journal, but my daughter was only interested in the locking aspect of the journal. I puchased it at a fantastic price from Amazon. It was a cute gift for my daughter, and I am glad that I found it. I really don’t reckon an older child would enoy it much because it is very simple to get into the journal if you know the password. You must set your password as soon as you place the batteries in, or you will have to take them out for a few minutes and start over. I would recommend this product for children 5-8 years ancient.

My 7 year ancient daughter was very excited to get this for Christmas. Until she found out that her 9 year ancient brother could read the journal easily. The product makes out that the journal could only be accessed by a password. Not right. There are many new and improved password journals that are very durable and not easily accessed by others – very case sensitive. To girls privacy is vital. Do not waste your money on this one. Rather pay additional $5 for a better one.

This was the one present my two daughters had to have! They are 6 and 8. This is by far the worst toy that I have bought for my children! After you program it to remember your password it is nearly impossible to get it to recognize your password! You have to say it just right! Not only that but after 3 days of trying to get it to open again once it did the front fell off and not its just a overpriced notepad! I would not recommend this for anyone it is not a excellent gift!

Get the one with a key instead
    Rating:2 out of 5 stars
My 9 year ancient daughter wanted this so terrible for Christmas so we got it and setting it up took more effort than we both were willing to give because you have to set the password as soon as you get the second battery of three in and we weren’t ready so it chose the first sound it heard which was “what?” so we have to reset the password and it took about 5 tries to get it right, then setting the date took a couple of times as well as the time. You have to pretty much speak like a machine for it to know you. Now for the product itselfs material wise it just feel cheap as anything and will probably break quite easiliy if accidentally dropped. On the plus side my daughter likes coming home from school and checking to see if there were any intruders. When you open it with your password it says “X amount of intruders” today. The light does come on when you give the command but when asking for the time it always gives the date. I would recommend getting a nice book journal that comes with a lock and key.

I guess its fun to have to have a password to get into your journal, but you have to use the same inflection, and make sure the word is said just right otherwise you have to reset ALL of it including date and time which takes a small time, and what kid has that time???? ha! It’s fun but I can see it getting ancient quickly.

I bought two of these Journals for my 10 and 11 year ancient girls. We found out that the voice activated password is not too excellent. My girls are often yelling the password into the microphone trying to get it to open. Also, the hinges are not too excellent. One of the journels was delivered with the hinge disconnected. I was able to bend the cover back into place but it often pops off when you try to close the journel. I was going to return it but then the same thing started to happen to the other journel. I figure it is a design deffect.

I bought this for my 8 year ancient daughter, and she LOVED it when she got it, but it took us nearly an hour to set the password. You must have complete silence and speak extremely slowly for it to set.

Also, the marker that comes with it is supposed to write in invisible ink and show up when the light that is included inside is bright on it, doesn’t work.

    Overall, not a fantastic bargain.

Clean toy for a young girl
    Rating:5 out of 5 stars
We got this for our 5 year ancient daughter for Christmas. This was without a doubt her favorite toy that she received. She has a six year ancient brother and the thought of keeping him out of her journal is very vital to her.

Setting up the journal password is a bit hard. The key seems to be to “whisper” the password. If you speak loudly the system seems to not know or get overloaded, I am not sure.

But, the “whispering” of the password seems to add to the enjoyment of the experience for my daughter. She feels like she is keeping a secret.

I would say one time out of three the book will not let her in when she says the password, but even then it is simply fun and makes her laugh, “intruder alert.”

So, to those of you who bought this, try to whipser the password, see if you have success. Those of you considering it, know that it is fantastic fun, and well worth the price.

This was on the wish list for my 5 and 8 year ancient girls. Although we followed the directions, step by step, the journal at first would not recognize the password once set. We even made sure to use the same tone of voice, but nothing. Now, it opens without a password – which defeats the entire purpose!

It has the potential to be a fun toy, if it worked. Glad I didn’t pay full price.

As a side note, my niece has another brand and it has the same problems.

I bought one of these for each of my daughters (8 and 9) as Christmas gifts. They were so excited…for about 4 hours. My 8 year ancient’s stopped latching by the afternoon on Christmas day Afer repair attempts, it still did not stay shut. She was very disappointed, especially because her sister’s still worked. But no worries, by the next morning, her sister’s wasn’t operating properly either – it kept alarming. Then, after opening, it started automatically closing. Now, it only opens sometimes and makes a grinding noise. I am pretty sure I will not buy Girl Tech or Radica again. I can see one toy being a lemon, but two…the product must not be very excellent… No fun at all, disappointing and the girls do not know how people can make toys that break so quick. I will be sticking to the ancient fashioned toys!

This product was bought for a seven yr. ancient girl by us, her grandparents. She was thrilled when her grandfather got it to work. She entered her passwork and it worked for about three hours. She chose to change the password and from then on, it wouldn’t lock or do what it was advertized to do. Needless to say, our grandaughter was very sad. I’m not sure what we should do with this disappointment…

I bought this toy for my 7 year ancient and she was very pleased with it. But it was too complicated for her to setup. Then the password voice recognition system, which was a very fun concept, did not recognize her password 7 out of 10 times. It was loud and very frustrating! And of course I could not help her open it because it did not recognize my voice. Add to this that she chose “Mama” was a fantastic password and what you get is a 2 star toy. She sits in her room saying “Mama” “Mama” “Mama” a dozen times before the journal will stop alarming and really open up. She is still rather proud of the thing and uses it alot. So as far as my daughter is concerned it is okay, perhaps even really cool, when it works. But I doubt I would buy it again if I had it to do over.

We bought this for our 7 year ancient daughter who is very interested in keeping a journal- and even more interested in keeping her younger twin sisters out of her stuff. The journal is so secure that even our 7 year ancient is not able to open it WITH the password. We have reset the password 10+ times (every time she wants to open it) and tried a variety of combinations- long words, small words, words ending in vowels… all to no avail. Once she was really miserable when her 4 year ancient sister managed to get it open with a word that wasn’t the password and she couldn’t. Skip this and buy one with keys….
